FAQs Regarding Summer 2020 Cancellations

Northwestern University has cancelled all residential and face-to-face youth summer programs for summer 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Please visit each Institute’s homepage to see if online learning opportunities will be made available for any of our programs this summer.  Students and their families will also receive emailed updates regarding all of these changes.  If you have questions in the meantime, please contact us at nhsi@northwestern.edu.

Why are the Theatre Arts and Film & Video programs cancelled?

We—like all of you—have been carefully watching the evolving impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. All of us hope to return to normal activity as soon as possible, but we must continue to prioritize the health and safety of our community. Unfortunately, it has become clear that the restrictions resulting from the pandemic will continue for some time. Although this decision is disappointing for all of us, we believe it is necessary to achieve our ultimate goal – to resume the impactful in-person programs that NHSI has been creating for 90 years.

Will NHSI offer online options?

NHSI will offer online programs in Debate and Playwriting this summer.  Please check the Debate Institute homepage for further information on that programming at https://nhsi.northwestern.edu/debate-division/.  Our Playwriting Program is only for students who have participated in the Playwriting Program in Chicago with John Corwin or in Los Angeles with Ian Merrigan or Marcus Folmar.  Please go to: https://nhsi.northwestern.edu/film-video-division/nhsi-playwriting-intensive/ for further information about this programming.

Unfortunately, we are unable to take our Film and Video Institute and our Theatre Institute online this summer.  After careful consideration, we came to the conclusion that we could not offer programming that would meet the standard of quality of our on-campus Institutes.

I have already paid my tuition deposit. Will it be refunded?

We will refund all tuition payments that have been made, including the deposit. We appreciate your patience with NHSI and Northwestern University during this process.  You do not need to do anything for your refund to begin processing.

Summer 2021

I was accepted and enrolled in NHSI 2020. Can this acceptance be transferred to 2021?

Any student currently accepted and enrolled in NHSI 2020, who will be a sophomore or junior in high school in the fall of 2021 is eligible for enrollment in NHSI 2021. If you had already paid your deposit for the 2020 session, your deposit will still be refunded. We will be in touch in December 2020 to students who would qualify for re-enrollment with the necessary steps to take to participate in our 2021 summer.

This was my last summer to participate – I will have graduated from high school in summer 2021. Can you make exceptions to the age limits?

As NHSI is a pre-college program, we regret that we are unable to support students who are eligible for enrollment at the college level.

I have already sent in my registration paperwork. Can NHSI keep it and utilize it for summer 2021?

No, forms cannot be kept for next summer. They will be stored until we are able to destroy them securely, and if you choose to re-enroll we will ask for updated paperwork.
