At the National High School Institute, Theatre Arts students receive a one of a kind, hands-on production experience. Each summer students rehearse, stage manage, help build, and perform in fully-mounted productions.
Every Theatre Arts student acts in one production which is directed, choreographed, and designed by experienced professionals. Design/Tech students each stage manage one of the Cherubs productions. Cherubs fosters a collaborative community. Every student works behind the scenes to help build the costumes, sets, and lights for each production. Students will also crew two of the other productions during the final performance week.
Being on crew was valuable because being on headset allowed me to discover how much is happening behind the curtains during a show. Backstage is just as busy as on-stage!”
Final productions are performed in repertory at Northwestern’s The Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts. Each Cherubs production performs twice during the last week of the Theatre Arts program; one afternoon and one evening performance.
This was the best rehearsal process I’ve ever seen, and I think, beyond growing as an actor, I learned how to better contribute as a cast member.”
