Theatre Arts Faculty Bios

George Keating – Director of the Theatre Arts Division

George Keating (he/him) is a longtime member of Actors’ Equity Association. He holds a B.F.A. in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University. He is the Studio Artistic Director at The Theatre School and an Adjunct Professor of Performance. He most recently directed The Boys in the Band and Journey’s End at TTS. George is co-founder of Theatrebam Chicago and co-creator of the award-winning hit show Schoolhouse Rock Live!. He appeared in SRL! in Chicago, on tour and off-Broadway. George was honored to train in kabuki with Shozo Sato, Royal Treasure of Japan, culminating in a performance in the world premiere Kabuki Lady Macbeth at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. George received the inaugural Angela Lansbury Award for Best Supporting Actor at the International Mystery Writers’ Festival. He appears on Chicago’s many stages such as: Paramount, Goodman, Northlight, Chicago Shakespeare and Court. Notable roles: Officer William Murdoch, Titanic; Baptista Minola, The Taming of the Shrew; Felix Ungar, The Odd Couple; George Banks, Mary Poppins; Thenardier, Les Miserables; The Baron, Grand Hotel and Gould in Grey Gardens. At NHSI, he has served as Core Faculty since the year 2000 and has directed numerous productions: The Serpent, The Madwoman of Chaillot, The Other Shore, Strider, Find Hakamadare!, The Scarecrow, The Handmaid’s Tale, A Dream Play, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings and Animal Farm.

Seraphine Terryberry – Associate Director

Seraphine Terryberry (she/her) is a teacher, writer, and director with a deep love for comedic storytelling and a knack for chaos coordination. She trained at The Second City Training Center and graduated as valedictorian from The Second City Film School—making her, quite literally, certified to be funny (a responsibility she takes very seriously).

She later joined The Second City teaching faculty as a writing instructor for both adults and youth and also served as Facility Supervisor at Franklin Park Arts Center, where she oversaw countless performances and events, including the first Bob Ross art exhibit.

Seraphine recently toured France as a performer for a TIE program and looks forward to returning to the Chicago area and putting her certification to serious use.

Rachel Laufer – Residence Hall Director

Rachel Laufer (she/her) is a New York City–based actor and theatre artist, over the moon to be back at Cherubs for her fourth summer on staff! A proud New Orleans native, she earned her BA in Theatre from Florida State University and is an alum of FSU’s Theatre Academy London. Recent credits include Fat Cat Killers (AD) with SparkPlug Productions, Murder for Two (ASM) and The Importance of Being Earnest (AD) at Le Petit Theatre, and Hadestown: Teen Edition (choreographer/co-director) and Six: Teen Edition (choreographer) at The Willow School. Favorite acting credits include The Lesson (Student) and Hamlet (Ophelia) at FSU. Rachel is so looking forward to meeting the next class of theatre makers and can’t wait to make this the best summer ever!

Jen Smith – Production Manager & Stage Management Faculty

Jen Smith (she/her) is happy to continue her working relationship with the Cherub program after teaching Stage Management last summer. Jen was very familiar with the program after working side by side with the Cherubs while she was the Production Manager for Northwestern’s Wirtz Center a number of years ago.  Since Northwestern, Jen has worked with DePaul’s Theatre School where she graduated as a Stage Manager/Production Manager.  Jen has long working relationships at many Chicago theatres including Lookingglass (Production Manager), Chicago Shakespeare (Director of Production) and The Goodman Theatre (Asst. Prod. Mgr.). Jen warmed up for a bit and worked with Arizona Theatre Company, producing in both Tucson and Phoenix but returned to the Midwest to work with Milwaukee Repertory Theatre as General Manager. Jen is currently back in the freelance world and most recently was the interim Production Manager for University of Illinois Chicago.  She is also the Production Manager for Haymarket Opera Company. Izzi King – Assistant Residence Hall Director

Izzi King is absolutely stoked to be returning to Cherubs this summer! This is their second year as Assistant Dorm Director and their third year working at NHSI. A previous Cherub herself (Cherubs class of 2019), Izzi loves helping young artists foster their craft and is passionate about giving back to the community that once gave so much to her. Izzi currently co-runs Sub Rosa Theatre Collective (a non-profit anti-capitalist theatre group in Chicago) and is a working actor, certified intimacy professional, and theater director in the city. Krista Ploger- Assistant Production Manager

Krista Ploger (She/Her) is looking forward to joining the team at Cherubs this summer as Assistant Production Manager. She is a Chicago area based stage manager and a recent graduate of Illinois State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Theater Production Design and Technology with a focus in stage management. While at Illinois State, Krista was also Production Manager for the student production company Freestage. Recent stage management credits include Arsenic and Old Lace, Into the Woods, and The Suspicious Butler.

Mark Boergers – Core Faculty

Mark Boergers (he/him) is a producer, director, educator, facilitator and artistic advocate based in Chicago, IL. He served as Chair of Visual and Performing Arts and Artistic Director of the theater program at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, WI.  He also is co-founder of Shakespeare on the Ridge in Evanston, IL as well as the former producing Artistic Director of The Arc Theatre in Chicago, IL.  Mark has worked as a Casting Assistant for Paskal-Rudnicke Casting in on-camera casting for television, film, online and commercial projects.  Mark is passionate about facilitating artists’ processes and showcasing them to audiences to ignite community dialogue and shared emotional intelligence.  Mark holds his BS in Business and Theatre from Marquette University and his MFA in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University.  markboergers.com

Callie Fabac – Core Faculty

Callie Fabac (she/her) grew up in Kansas City but is now happy to call NYC her home. Since moving to the city, Callie has been acting, assistant-directing, writing, collaborating, building community, and eating amazing food. Recent projects include Alexandria (Off-broadway, PopUp Productions), The Sex Writer (NY Premiere, Thin Duke Productions), Come & Knock Down My Door (Thin Duke), Third Law (What Will the Neighbors Say?), Clown Bar 2 (SparkPlug Productions for NYCFringe), Macbeth (Courtyard Shakespeare), and Sins of the South on Oxygen.

Ryan Kitley – Core Faculty

Ryan Kitley (he/him) is thrilled to be joining The Cherubs for the first time this summer. Ryan has been acting, teaching, coaching, and directing in Chicago for nearly 30 years. He is adjunct faculty at DePaul, and teaches with many other programs around the city. Favorite Chicago theater credits include Inherit the Wind, Objects in the Mirror, Roe, Support Group for Men (Goodman), Lettie (Victory Gardens), Romeo and Juliet (CST), Assassination Theater (MBC), Burn This, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (SGT), Transformations 2000 (Piven), The Big Funk (Clock Prod.), among others. Ryan received a Jeff award for best ensemble in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with Shattered Globe Theatre, a Jeff nomination for best supporting actor in The Big Funk, and best actor nomination for his work on the film Guidance. Ryan is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from The Theatre School at DePaul. Film and television credits include The Chi, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Proven Innocent, Boss, Empire, Detroit 1-8-7, Turks, Early Edition, Dig Two Graves, Guidance, among others. Ryan holds an MFA in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul. Represented by Gray Talent Group, he is a proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA.

Kenesha Reed – Core Faculty

For years, Kenesha (she/her) has served as a Dance and Performing Arts Educator in the cities of Memphis, TN and Chicago, IL to students aged 4 – 18 years old at notable arts organizations, regional theaters, dance schools, public schools and charter schools. She is currently the Upper School Dance Teacher for Francis W. Parker. Her Chicago Regional credits include Rosencrantz & Guildenstern (Court Theater), Judy’s Life’s Work (Definition Theatre), Bobo the Bully (Black Ensemble Theater), Lot 110 (Definition Theatre), The Color Purple/Workshop (Definition Theatre), Songs for a New World (Beverly Arts Center), and Shadow Town – named one of the Top 10 plays in Chicago by the Chicago Theater Beat in 2013 (Her Story Theater/The Den Theater). Television credits: 61st Street (Co-Star), Chicago Med Season 5 Episode 15 (Guest Star). Commercial credits: Pearl Milling Company: Stacked for Every Occasion. Dance Company Credits: Joel Hall Dance Company (Apprentice, 2013) and Red Clay Dance Company (Company Member 2019-2022).

Brennan Roach – Core Faculty

(he/him) is a theatre artist and educator currently based in Chicago, IL. He has collaborated with numerous theatre institutions as well as high school and university programs across the United States and Europe as an actor, director, teacher, and movement designer. He has trained with many global artists and theatre companies including SITI Company and the Suzuki Company of Toga in Japan. Brennan is the Director of the theatre program and Fine Arts Department Chair at Jones College Prep in the heart of downtown Chicago. He is passionate about helping young people find and give voice to their stories through the creation and performance of original work. He received his BFA from The Boston Conservatory, his MA from Northeastern Illinois University and his MAT from Rockford University, IL

Concetta Russo – Core Faculty

Connie Russo is thrilled to be joining the Cherubs this summer! A Northwestern MFA grad, she’s appeared in many regional productions, most recently appearing in Music Theatre Works production of Godspell! Originally from the north east, Connie was a company member at Shakespeare and Company, working as a a company member at Shakespeare & Company, working as an actor and teaching artist for several years. Connie is a lover of true crime podcasts, singing, trying fancy restaurants, books on tape, and all things, Jane Austin (No, really, she’s been to her birthplace in England and where she wrote pride and prejudice). You may sometimes see her moonlighting as her sassy, brash, not-so-clever clown, Flower.

Cassie Slater – Core Instructor

Cassie Slater (she/her) is a mother, a teacher, a maker, a director, and an award-winning actor and singer. Cassie has worked extensively in the development of new musicals and has been a featured vocalist at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Joe’s Pub, and Merkin Concert Hall. In 2009, she won the New York Music Theater Festival’s Next Broadway Sensation Competition, which led to her solo show Chimera at Joe’s Pub. Cassie’s autobiographical play with music, How To Lobster, premiered as part of Steppenwolf Theatre’s LookOut Series in the spring of 2023. She created the award-winning early childhood music and creative play program, Stomp and Shout Kids, in 2012 which continues to encourage joy, social emotional learning and authentic creativity with the early childhood set in Chicago and beyond. She was the Educational Director for Sunrise Arts Group in Shanghai China for three seasons and has taught and directed for multiple young people’s programs across the US. Dinah Berkeley – Directing Faculty

Dinah Berkeley (they/them) is a Theatre Maker, Arts Educator and Citizen Artist whose work is rooted in devising, clown, mime, puppetry and an array of experimental, physical and non-commercial forms of theatre creation. Their work has been witnessed globally from The American Conservatory Theatre’s Geary Stage in San Francisco to the Streets of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh Scotland. From St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn NY to El Festival De Payaso in El Bolsón Argentina. They’ve had the pleasure of working with Chicago theatre companies such as Shattered Globe, A Red Orchid, Trapdoor and Red, as well as at Improv Olympic and The Understudy Bookshop and Cafe. They are proud to have joined Healing Arts Chicago’s 2027 cohort, and are a member of Broken Box Mime Theatre in NYC. You can read their plays on newplayexchange.org

Tim Giles – Directing Faculty

Tim Giles (he/him) is an actor, director, and educator. He’s very excited to be returning to Cherubs in a new capacity for 2026. He has served as a Core Instructor for two years and is pumped to be joining the team of directors for this summer. He holds a BFA from Rutgers University and an MFA from the University of South Carolina. He is deeply invested in constructing educational environments that encourage students’ creativity and which invite them to investigate what is possible in theater. Most recently he has taught at Pomona College where he also co-directed The Play That Goes Wrong and directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He recently received his certification in teaching clown from The Clown School in Los Angeles and tries to bring the chaotic joy of clowning to everything he works on.

Derek Herman – Directing Faculty

Derek Herman (he/him) is a New York–based theatre educator, director, and actor. He teaches at the Professional Performing Arts School, where he has directed Gloria and Lord of the Flies. He has taught at Hunter College High School and the Chicago High School for the Arts. His work centers on empowering young artists by amplifying their voices through ensemble-driven, community-centered performance. His directing work includes Dear Mr. Zinn, presented at the Tamiment Library, and new work for young audiences with Magik Theatre and Northwest Children’s Theatre. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association with performance credits in Chicago, Portland, and New York, along with television appearances on Investigation Discovery, History Channel, and Oxygen. He holds a BFA in Acting from Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts and a Master’s in Theatre Education from NYU, where he studied solo performance with Anna Deavere Smith and created his solo show Morphin’ Time. He is a published writer in the Youth Theatre Journal and an actor-researcher with NYU’s Verbatim Performance Lab, creating theatre around migration, free expression, and racial inequity. He has been part of the Cherubs faculty since 2012 in multiple roles and is thrilled to return this summer to direct.

Sarah Mayhew – Directing Faculty

Sarah Mayhew (she/her) is a director, actor, and educator based in Birmingham, AL. She holds an MFA in Performance & Pedagogy from Texas Tech University and a BA in Musical Theatre from Birmingham-Southern College. She is delighted to return for her third summer with Cherubs! Previous directing credits with the program include Witch (Jen Silverman) and Treasure Island (Mary Zimmerman).

During the academic year, Mayhew serves as the Recruitment Coordinator for the Department of Theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She also works as a freelance artist teaching youth theatre classes, directing, and performing. Recent directing projects include A Sick Day for Amos McGee and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Birmingham Children’s Theatre). Recent performance credits include the White Witch in Narnia: The Musical (Birmingham Children’s Theatre) and Squeaky Fromme u/s in Assassins (Virginia Samford Theatre). Sofia Ubilla – Directing Faculty

Sofia Ubilla (she/her) is a South Florida-born Costa Rican director, theatre artist, and administrator. She is currently a First Year MFA Directing Candidate at Northwestern University and is so excited to be joining Cherubs this summer. Past directing credits include Yerma (Northwestern University), The Amethyst and The Peridot (Fordham University), Aztec Pirates, or the Insignificance of Life on Mars (Chain Theatre), A Few Good Men, Sweat (SUNY Brockport), Saguaros (JACK), The Girls (Dixon Place), Valor, agravio y mujer and Cloud Tectonics (Fordham University). Past assistant and associate directing credits include Much Ado About Nothing (Public Theatre Mobile Unit), Dirty Laundry (WP Theatre), we are continuous (Geva Theatre), Los empeños de una casa, La Conducta de la Vida (Repertorio Español), and Somewhere Over the Border (Syracuse Stage). She was the Spring 2025 and 2023 Directing Fellow at Geva Theatre and has worked on a variety of projects with WP Theatre, INTAR Theatre, Bay Street Theatre, Hedgepig Ensemble, Latinx Playwrights Circle, and Microteatro Miami. Kerstin Vaughn – Directing Faculty

Kerstin Vaughn (she/her) is thrilled to be returning to Cherubs for the fourth time this summer. Currently, she is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Wooster in Ohio where she teaches courses in acting, directing, and history and advises student-led productions. In addition to teaching, she works as a stage director and intimacy choreographer. As a director and teacher, Kerstin is committed to creating safe and joyful spaces for theatrical collaboration. Most recent credits include Boeing Boeing (intimacy choreographer and vocal coach), Native Gardens (director), Legacy of Light (director), An Iliad (director), and Fun Home(intimacy choreographer).

Oskar Westbridge – Directing Faculty

Oskar Westbridge (they/them) is a director, teaching artist, and occasional sound designer. This will be their fifth time working with the Cherubs program, having directed DECOMPOSED THEATRE last summer. Other directing credits include “Rossum’s Universal Robots” and “Frankenstein” as a guest artist at Triton College, and “Knights of the Group Project” for Improv Playhouse’s TYA program. As an educator, they’ve taught at Lookingglass Theatre, Oak Park Festival Theatre, DePaul University, UIC, and the Park District of Oak Park.
